Peeps Rice Krispies Treats

Manageability – Easy, but meh.

Peeps are a divisive food. People like me think Peeps are cute and tasty, and a fun little compliment to a lovely springtime holiday – filled with hope, joy, and warmth, they’re a literal feel-good food. Other people, like my husband, think Peeps are garbage poison that taste like burnt socks, and act as a shining example of post-modern capitalism, and the commercialization of religion for profits. But this Peeps Rice Krispies Treat recipe from Smart School House is something we both agree on.

Why do we agree on this recipe? Because it’s awesome. Because these are basically adorable Rice Krispie treats. And who, from the highest king to the lowest peasant, does not enjoy a Rice Krispie treat?? Plus, you have the benefit of drowning peeps in a sea of Krispies, then resurrecting them as treats – just like the real story from the book. You know, Jesus Easter resurrection cross church bible flood – that whole thing… As with any recipe, there are a few hitches. These treats don’t taste horrible, but they ain’t exactly what Bart Simpson cut school for (“say it right, Frenchie!”). Personally, I felt it was too much butter. This also affected the texture – these were very goopy/slimy. Recommend maybe less butter or more Rice Krispies, just adjust that ratio a little. Also – you’ll notice these are a little brown/mud looking. The colors from the Peeps tend to bleed together, so be aware. I would stir them a little less to keeps some pieces of the colored sugar. But otherwise, great! Finally, a use for Peeps we can all agree on!

Happy Easter to you and your families! May your Peeps be tasty, and not a grim reminder of pending dystopia!
